As with all large social gatherings and sporting events being hastily canceled, officials behind the games decided to postpone the event by one whole year.

At the time, the organizers of Tokyo 2020 and the IOC said in a joint statement:

"The unprecedented and unpredictable spread of the outbreak has seen the situation in the rest of the world deteriorating... The IOC president and the prime minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community."

Understandably, many people were left completely devastated by the decision...

Millions of people all over the world were geared up for a summer of sports.

But it was the athletes who were hit the hardest with the news, all who had qualified to take part in the games were left heartbroken by the delay.

They began on July 23, 2021 and will continue until August 8, 2021.

Strict precautions and restrictions are in place at the Games which includes requiring athletes to have daily saliva tests.

Additionally, everyone at the Games is required to wear a mask and spectators have been barred from most Olympic events.

Its safe to say, its a very different Olympics to what has ever been experienced before...

Getty

But, many are just relieved to see it take place.

Tokyo has cranked things up a level to make sure this is one of the best event the world has ever seen.

Even though stadiums will only be allowing fifty percent capacity, they were originally built to hold hundreds and some, even thousands, of spectators.

The state-of-the-art technology the country has to offer makes it all the more interesting to see just how well prepared they were for the occasion.

Sadly though, after the Games are over, things take a downhill turn, as displayed by other host nations.

Countries all around the world have left their stadiums abandoned and totally unfit for use and the photos are overwhelmingly eerie... Have a look for yourselves.

After the war the Soviet Army took it over as a military base and also as a training facility for its own Olympic athletes."

"A general view taken on August 3, 2012 shows an abandoned training pool for athletes in the Olympic Village left behind after the 2004 Games. Eight years after hosting the Olympic Games in the country where they were born, Greeks seem more interested in finding out if there will be light at the end of their dismal economic tunnel than showing concern about what is happening at the London Olympics."

Metro-Mangueira 'favela' community.

"Most of the favela remains abandoned following removals and demolitions ahead of the World Cup and Olympics. The favela sits about 750 meters from Maracana stadium, which hosted the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Nearly one year after Rio hosted the first Olympic Games in South America, many of the costly venue sites are now shuttered or underused amidst a deep economic crisis in the city."

Hopefully, Tokyo doesn't suffer the same fate...
