Couple Found and Adopted a Baby Abandoned on Subway | 22 Words

A truly heartwarming story of a family coming together against the odds has broken the internet this week.

Back in 2000, then thirty-four-year-old Danny Stewart was running late for dinner with his boyfriend, then thirty-two-year-old Pete Mercurio in New York City. He was navigating the city's subway system when he made a strange discovery. At first, he thought it was just an abandoned coat or piece of luggage, and nearly ignored it completely. But then, he decided to take a closer look.

He then made the shocking realization that this was in fact a baby boy and there was no one around who he thought the baby could possibly belong to.

"I stroked his head and then he whimpered a little bit," he told the BBC. "It seemed really unreal, the whole situation, and at that point, I was trying to alert people to what was happening, but I couldn't get anybody's attention."

The pair reported the discovery to the authorities but knew they couldn't leave things there. "I remember turning to Danny and saying to him on the sidewalk as the police car was driving away, 'You know, you're going to be connected to that baby in some way for the rest of your life,'" Mercurio explained.

And when the pair were called up in family court to explain the situation, the judge asked them a question that would change their lives forever - whether they'd be interested in adopting the child. In spite of the fact the pair had never really considered being parents before, they decided to take a chance

The first year was particularly difficult. The little boy (whom the pair decided to name Kevin) was still dealing with the trauma of the earliest moments of his life. But over the years, the unusual family has built a bond - and Kevin has grown up to be a truly remarkable young man.

Kevin is now twenty years old, he is currently enrolled in college and is studying computer science and math. His family describes him and calm and kind and they wanted to share their remarkable story with the world - so badly, that they decided to turn it into a book!

Our Subway Baby is now available on Amazon and has an average 4.9-star rating based on over 150 reviews. And it's safe to say people are loving this heartwarming story.
