There are still so many problems here in the United States.

And sadly so, the majority of these problems stem from the U.S police force.

Did you know that the rate of fatal police shootings among Black Americans is much higher than that for any other ethnicity? It stands currently at thirty-five fatal shootings per million of the population as of March 2021.

The tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, George Floyd, and Daunte Wright are mere examples of this...

And it seems as if those within the police force aren't the only authority figures discriminating against people of color.

Because a mom in Louisianna has recently claimed her son was refused medical treatment at a hospital when he was shot in the leg...

And it was all because of his slogan sweater that read "Gangsta Wrapper."

And have been expressing their disgust over the doctor's unprofessionalism in a potentially life or death situation.

But many felt the mom had taken the situation in the completely wrong way...

Shelly Jack spoke to KATC-TV about the ordeal her seventeen-year-old son went through.

ABC13

While holding up the red sweater that he was wearing, she explained that her son was shot in the leg while trying to pull a friend away from a fight.

But when they sought medical treatment at a hospital, the doctor took issue with the sweater that had an image of Santa Claus with the text "Gangsta Wrapper."

"It's a joke," the mom said, "Just a funny shirt."

‚ÄčThe doctor at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Ville Platte, a town of around 7,000 near Lafayette, refused to treat the teen after lecturing him about the shirt.

"He looked at him and said 'You have the nerve to come into my office with this gangsta apparel after you got shot in the leg, and all the kids got shot due to gangster activity'," Shelly explained.

Shelly's son was then told he'd have to make an appointment with a surgeon to have the bullet removed from his leg.

ABC13

She said:

"I said, 'I don't see the problem, but he can take it off.' He said, 'No, you don't come into my office with this gangsta gear. That's disrespectful to me and everyone else in here.' And he ranted on how he wasn't going to participate in helping a gang member. That's what I got from it."

Thankfully, the teenager was able to make an appointment with another surgeon...

And Shelly has assured that he isn't a part of a gang and he played absolutely no part in the shooting.

The mom has since filed a complaint with the hospital.

ABC13

"It hurt my feelings because I know my son. He's not perfect but he's trying. He's in high school about to graduate. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. That doesn't give him the right to profile him because of something he was wearing."

What do you think about the situation?

Do you think this was a blatant act of discrimination and racism? Or do you think Shelly has simply taken the doctor's refusal in the wrong way?
