Britney Spears has broken her silence and has revealed just how bad her conservatorship really is.
For the first time on Wednesday, pop icon, Britney Spears, appeared virtually in court to talk about her conservatorship.
"It is my wish and dream for all of this to end," she said, "I want my life back."
In 2008, Britney's father, Jamie Spears, was granted a temporary conservatorship as Britney was dealing with a severe mental health crisis as she fought for custody of her 2 sons in what was a very public and overwhelming battle. She was consistently hounded by the media until she fully broke down, shaving her head and engaging in substance abuse.
Jamie took advantage of the situation and has had control of her finances and her life now for over thirteen years in what she has described as an "abusive" deal. He and everyone else that is involved in the conservatorship maintain that it's still an effective machine that has benefitted the singer greatly, especially when she was at a low point in her career.
Jamie has also added that she could end it whenever she wants, but that clearly doesn't seem to be as easy as he's been making out it is as her recent appearance in court revealed some very troubling details.
"After I've told the whole world I'm OK, it's a lie," she said. "I'm not happy, I can't sleep, I'm depressed, I cry every day."
Britney was angry, a stark contrast from what we're used to seeing from her on social media, where she is often amusing her fans with cute dance routines and summer styles.
"I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive," said Britney, "My request is to end the conservatorship without being evaluated like before."
She also explained how the lawyer that was chosen for her did not tell her that she could petition to end her conservatorship at any point.
And if things weren't concerning enough, for the first time, Britney revealed that her father also had control over her body, making her keep her IUD (intrauterine contraceptive device) so that she couldn't have children if she wanted to.
"I have an IUD in my body right now that won't let me have a baby, and my conservators won't let me go to the doctor to take it out," she said.
Speaking of her father's actions, she continued, "The control he had over someone as powerful as me, as he loved the control to hurt his own daughter 100,000%."
Fans have been concerned about the singer's welfare for years now.
The #FreeBritney movement first started back in 2009 when a group of the icon's fans got together to protest the control in her life after they caught wind of just how destructive her conservatorship has been.
Ever since then, the movement has just gained more traction, with more and more people realizing that something just was not right about her father's control over life. The way he used her mental health was nothing short of manipulative and fans were not going to give up until she was free.
And after her latest appearance in court, it seems as though they were right.
Other prominent figures, including her former boyfriend and fellow pop singer, Justin Timberlake who has apologized for his past behavior towards Britney, have also added that she deserves to "live her life the way she wants."
The revelation is truly unsettling.
End the conservatorship. Free Britney.
