A struggling cleaner from Melbourne is now $80 million richer after winning Australia's third-biggest lottery prize in history.
The father, like many others, had lost his job due to the pandemic and had been working as a cleaner to make ends meet. But in an amazing twist of fate, he won the Lotto jackpot.
The Melbourne worker has endured 6 lockdowns and held only division 1 entry in Thursday's Powerball draw 1317. "I am so excited. I checked my ticket late last night. I couldn't sleep after that!" the family man, who wished to remain anonymous, told local media, as per the Daily Mail.
He explained how it had been tough for his family over the last year: "I lost my job during one of the many lockdowns here in Melbourne. We had only just bought a home and didn't see it coming."
Australia has been notoriously strict when it comes to the pandemic and the country has been in and out of state-wide lockdowns since March 2020.
The cleaner had a 1 in 134 million chance to guess the correct numbers for the lotto draw... and miraculously, he won the $80 million jackpot!
However, despite the mass amount of money that is set to hit his bank account, the man remained humble for his win, stating he just wanted to make life better for his family: "I am certainly keen to pay off the mortgage and the other bills we have to begin with," he stated.
"We're going to set our kids up for life. That will be an incredible thing to be able to do. There's so much we will be able to do with this prize. It will change so many people's lives!"
The winning entry was purchased online via OzLotteries.com, one of The Lott's authorized resellers.
There have been seventeen Powerball division 1 winners who have pocketed over $519.8 million in prize money across Australia in the twelve months leading up to June 30th, 2021.
Oz Lotto is set to offer more chances with Tuesday grab being $10 million and Thursday's Powerball with $3 million on the table.
