But let's start with the facts...What exactly is gender dysphoria? Gender dysphoria involves a conflict between a person's sex and the gender with which he or she identifies with. People with gender dysphoria experience high levels of discomfort with their own bodies, and they often report feeling as if it isn't their own.
It is more commonly known as being "transgender."
It is a heartbreaking reality that many trans children face rejection from their families.According to the Human Rights Campaign, studies have shown that familial rejection can lead to the LGBTQ+ youth engaging in behaviors and activities that endanger their health, trigger depression, and other mental health issues, and, in some extreme cases, can lead to homelessness and suicide.
Family support is one of the most important things for a child coming out as trans.
GettyChild welfare expert, Caitlin Ryan, stated that “family acceptance predicts greater self-esteem, social support, and general health status," for LGBTQ+ youth. “It also protects against depression, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation and behaviors - issues for which transgender youth are at disproportionate risk."
Coming out as transgender and beginning the transition will never be easy...Despite this being what a person desires, the first few steps into transition are never easy, especially for a child. Enduring taunting in the school corridors from their peers who are too uninformed to understand the situation is a sad reality for many trans children.
Thankfully, the LGBTQ+ community is bigger than ever today.
Families around the world are now more accepting than ever...
And one dad recently did a very important thing to raise awareness about the issue at a hearing on House Joint Resolution 53, a proposal that effectively bans trans athletes in high school from participating in girls' sports.
And he has received a wave of support for his kind words...
In his speech, Brandon Boulware, a Kansas City attorney and father of 4, recalled the day he learned to embrace his transgender daughter as her authentic self.
He said this: "I forced my daughter to wear boy clothes, get short haircuts and play on boy sports teams - Why did I do this? To protect my child... And, truth be told, I did it to protect myself as well. I wanted to avoid those inevitable questions as to why my child did not look and act like a boy."
He then let the audience know that his daughter made a request that changed his mindset.
"My daughter was equating being good with being someone else," he observed. "I was teaching her to deny who she is. On that day, my wife and I stopped silencing our child's spirit."
The concerned father voiced why Missouri lawmakers should reject such a law as it will "[effect] real people."
"Let them have their childhoods," he said. "Let them be who they are."
The speech comes after several other states including Mississippi have passed the legislation and other states are poised to follow.
Joe Biden has previously stated that discrimination based on gender identity in school sports should be prohibited.
