The coming-of-age Netflix series has been hailed the re-vamped Gilmore Girls.

The show follows fifteen-year-old Ginny Miller and her thirty-year-old mother as they navigate through their lives together...

The angsty Ginny feels like she can't compare to her charming mother as they move to settle in a fictional Massachusetts town. But of course, elements of Georgia's past are just around the corner, threatening her family's fresh start.

As exhausted as the concept may seem, the numbers were mind-blowing.

According to Netflix, the series attracted more than fifty-two million members' households in its first twenty-eight days and also made Netflix's Top 10 list in a whopping eighty-seven countries around the world.

Not only that, but it hit No. 1 in forty-six countries...

Which included Australia, Brazil, Kenya, and the U.S.

It is one of the only shows on Netflix that hails an all-female creative team...

Including first-time showrunner/executive producer Debra J. Fisher, first-time creator/executive producer Sarah Lampert, and director/executive producer Anya Adams.

And ever since then, it's been a hot talking point...

But along with the good news, came a flurry of outrage.

The Netflix show managed to conjure up some serious controversy during its short time on the streaming platform.

First of all, they were called out by Taylor Swift for an insensitive joke made about her love life...

"Why do you care, you go through men like Taylor Swift," read the line.

And knowing the line was thrown around the boardroom by a bunch of women just makes us cringe more.

Like come on? In 2021, we're still doing the whole sl** shaming thing? I thought we'd moved past those narrow-minded one-liners?

Or if we're still on them, why not pick from the hundreds of male celebrities that have dated numerous women?

Oh yeah, because they weren't absolutely demonized for their love lives.

It got so bad that Taylor Swift had to call them out on Twitter during Women's History Month.

"Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back," she said. "How about we stop degrading hard-working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY. Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn't look cute on you. Happy Women's History Month I guess."

And after a scandal like that, you would think you'd stray away from offensive one-liners...

imdb

But no, not if you're the creators of this show.

Remember when "Oppression Olympics: Let's go!" went viral?

During episode 8, a scene wherein Ginny and her boyfriend Hunter are discussing their racist teacher robbing her of winning the award for the best assignment due to it being "too unconventional," they decide to embark on what has to be one of the cringiest moments in Netflix history... The "Oppression Olympics."

Who is oppressed more?

Ginny, who is Black or Hunter, who is Asian-Taiwanese.

You needed to have a strong stomach to watch the scene unfold, that's for sure.

At one point, they're even accusing each other of not being Black or Asian enough. God, it's a drag. And what makes it worse is the fact that the actors themselves came up with the worst lines in that conversation, including Hunter's ever so eloquent: "I'm lucky I'm also American but then I'm a [army] draft dodger and just another soft American pu**y."

Stop it.

But despite all the drama, a lot of its most loyal fans have been begging for more.

And their prayers have finally been answered as Netflix has just renewed the series for a second season.

imdb

"We are so appreciative of the incredible response and love you all have shown 'Ginny & Georgia," showrunner, Debra Fisher said in a statement. "We're especially grateful to Brianne and Toni, who set the highest bar every step of the way. We can't wait to return to Wellsbury for Season 2."

The new season is rumored to feature 10 hour-long episodes.

And a lot of the cast members from Season 1 will also be making a re-appearance in the second season.

So far, no dates have been specified, but 2022 is looking like a good shout for Season 2.

We'll just have to wait and see.
