Indonesia isn't only congratulating its gold-winning women badminton players with sweet words, but cash, cows, houses, and a meatball restaurant, according to Reuters.
Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu took home the country's very first gold of the Tokyo Olympics on Monday, beating China's Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, making their country very proud.
The Island of Sulawesi, where Apriyani is from, promised her 5 cows and a house, while the meatball restaurant chain Baso Aci Abang gave the gold medalists a shopfront, if that doesn't show how proud they are, we don't know what will.
Greysia Polii has won gold medals in the women's doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 2014 Asian Games, and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. She was born in Jakarta and lived there until her dad passed away when she was just 2, moving then to Manado, being influenced to play badminton by her sister.
Her current partner is Apriyani, who began badminton as per her father's encouragement, steering her away from fighting neighborhood boys.
Sandiaga Uno, the country's tourism minister, has also announced on Monday that the pair will travel to the country's top six tourist destinations for free as per the South China Morning Post.
That amazing experience is only one of the beautiful things the pair have been showered with since their win, with the pair receiving 5 billion rupiahs ($350,000) cash awards from the government.
The win is the country's 8th gold medal since the sport was introduced in 1992 at the Barcelona Games, winning a gold medal every Olympics except the London 2012 Games, which was just an unlucky year.
Indonesia first competed at the Olympic Games in 1952, a whole fifty-six years after the Olympics first started in 1896. The 1952 Games were hosted in Helsinki. Indonesia hasn't however competed in the winter Olympics as of yet.
As of 2020, Indonesian athletes held thirty-seven medals in total, twenty-one in badminton, fifteen in weightlifting, and 1 in archery.
Greysia posted to her Instagram with a beautiful caption celebrating their win: "It has been 2 days after the label of Olympic Champion on our chest. I am so humbled by this achievement, words still cannot express how grateful I am, how thankful I am to the one who actually gave this opportunity, God."
And Apriyani posted the same photo expressing her amazement at their win: "First thank you to Allah SWT who is very very kind to give this gift to me and @greyspolii, we know this is very difficult, just by surrendering to HIM and only trying as much as possible in us, Alhamdulillah Thankgod."
We're sure there will be many more wins after this one for Indonesia! And many more gifts.
