Michael Constantine, better known as Costas 'Gus' Portokalos from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, has passed away aged ninety-four years old.
Since the news broke, tributes for the actor have been pouring in...
Michael Constantine, the dad to our cast-family, a gift to the written word, and always a friend. Acting with him came with a rush of love and fun. I will treasure this man who brought Gus to life. He gave us so much laughter and deserves a rest now. We love you Michael. 🇬🇷 pic.twitter.com/PV0sIBtaUX— Nia Vardalos (@NiaVardalos) September 9, 2021
"Heartbreaking news… He will be missed. We were just talking about him yesterday, and how his chuckle and 'payback' follow us everywhere. Rest in peace, Michael," one person wrote.
Constantine died peacefully from natural causes at his home in Pennsylvania while surrounded by his family.
Though the nature of his illness was not disclosed, Constantine had been ill for several years, the Reading Eagle reports.
The actor's brother-in-law, Michael Gordon confirmed the news of his passing.
Speaking with the Reading Eagle, Gordon said: "Last week he could still sing all 4 stanzas of the Reading High School alma mater from memory. He's always considered himself a Reading native. People would come up and say, 'You're from California,' (and he'd say) 'Oh no, I'm from Reading.'"
Constantine's sister, Patricia Gordon also added: "He loved his hometown. He came back here right after he won his Emmy for 'Room 222.' But then he was called back to California. He always loved coming home. He was very much a family person. He loved his children, his siblings, his parents."
Constantine was known for his role as Costas 'Gus' Portokalos, the overprotective father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
The actor also starred as Seymour Kaufman, a high school principal in the comedy series Room 222.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Michael Constantine.
