Rapper KTS has tragically been pronounced dead after he was shot sixty-four times in his head and body as he walked out of a Chicago jail.
The thirty-one-year-old died from bullet wounds in what police are calling an ambush shooting. Londre Sylvester, who is known by his stage name KTS Dre, was one of 3 people who were shot just outside the Cook County Jail in the Little Village section of Chicago on Saturday.
A full autopsy report detailing his injuries would not be released for weeks to come.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the shooting took place as KTS was released from jail while wearing a monitoring device on his ankle.
Witnesses reported that 2 armed gunmen stepped outside a vehicle and started shooting at KTS, striking him in the chest and face. Investigators found at least fifty-nine shell casings on the 2700 block of West 27th Street, which is across the street from the jail.
Following the ambush, KTS was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 9:30 pm on Saturday. A sixty-year-old woman who was reported to be with him at the time of the shooting suffered a wound to the knee but she was listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital, according to police.
"It appears Sylvester was the intended target while (the women) were inadvertently struck," the police report states, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Another woman, thirty, had a bullet graze to her face but was said to be in good condition, according to the Daily Mail.
Arrests are yet to be made in regards to the gunmen. The suspects re-entered their vehicles and fled the scene in different directions, the police report said.
KTS had been jailed for violating the conditions of his release in a 2020 felony gun case. He had been fitted with an electronic monitoring tag before walking free on Saturday, June 10th.
This ambush comes as Chicago faces a massive surge in violent crime over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Statistics from the police department showed that at least 108 people were shot, seventeen fatally, between July 2nd and July 4th. According to the Gun Violence Archive, over 10,700 have died due to gun violence so far in 2021.
The bloodshed was comparable to the Fourth of July weekend last year when seventeen people were fatally shot with seventy more wounded.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot - who last week claimed that ninety-nine percent of criticism of her is based on her gender or race - has blamed joblessness, poverty, and out-of-state gun smuggling for the ongoing violence spiral gripping the city she runs.
This was not the first time such a seemingly orchestrated attack occurred outside the jail or its neighboring courthouse.
On March 6th, 2017, a twenty-three-year-old man who beat a murder case was shot and killed minutes after leaving the jail. Kamari Belmont was released on $100,000 bail after his friend posted the necessary $10,000 to get him out of lockup, while he was being held on remaining robbery charges.
Rest in Peace, KTS. Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.
