The daughter of a Secret Service agent has gone viral after she made a series of TikTok videos sharing tips her father gave her to help protect herself when she found herself in a potentially dangerous situation...
And it has re-sparked an entire debate on women's rights.
Because the issue surrounding women's safety from men has been debated for many years now.
It's always the same narrative and outcome that millions of women all around the world face every single day...
And the scary thing is that its been normalized by so many different cultures.
Did you know that in the United Kingdom alone, ninety-seven percent of young women have been sexually harassed by men at some point in their lives?
A survey released by UN Women UK found that this percentage of females aged between eighteen and twenty-four have suffered sexual harassment, as women report losing faith in the ability of authorities to effectively deal with the abuse that they receive.
This is not okay...
Even after all these years if I am out late at night on an isolated street & I hear a man’s footsteps behind me I automatically cross the road. It is the habit of a lifetime to try & keep safe. But it should not have to be like this #SarahEverard— Diane Abbott MP (@HackneyAbbott) March 11, 2021
And although the awareness surrounding domestic abuse and sexual harassment is now more prominent than ever, way too many women find themselves as victims of these horrendous crimes every single day.
The recent story of Sarah Everard is a tragic example of this.
Sarah, who is from London, went missing on March 3rd after walking home at night from a friend's house and just a week later, her body was found in a forest a few miles away.
A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested and charged on suspicion of her kidnap and murder...
And, quite predictably, people have been reeling over the fact that a member of the police force may be involved with this horrific crime - especially due to the fact that the officer is believed to have had no connection with Sarah in the past.
It just goes to show how you really can't trust anyone...
Even those that are sworn in to protect the public.
The hashtag #NotAllMen has been trending ever since the murder came to light...
“not all men” are men dense ? all wasps don't sting but i’m still scared of all wasps because there's no way i could know which ones do. now apply this to men. it’s really not that difficult to understand :/— vi ⍨ zzzz offline (@cupidctrl) March 14, 2021
And although there have been certain individuals using this hashtag and refusing to see the big picture, people are aware of the dangers that women face every single day more than ever.
People are focused...
And they have been using their platforms to speak out against this type of violence, with a lot of them even having to resort to ulterior scenarios to explain it to the men who still don't understand.
And some women have even been sharing tips and tricks about how to stay safe when you're alone, walking in public, or even when someone tries to harass you.
Including Lauren Bell, the daughter of a Secret Service agent.
Lauren, who owns her own boutique store in Pennsylvania, used her TikTok account to share some very important tips recently about how women can protect themselves...
And these tips came from her father, a former Secret Service agent who "one hundred percent saved her life."
Lauren took her TikTok followers back to 2014 in a series of videos to explain a frightening incident that happened to her in a local store when a man started following her...
And people just couldn't believe what they were hearing.
Lauren started her storytime by explaining that the events took place as she was shopping at her local Marshalls store in 2014, which was just 1 mile from her house.
While shopping in the middle of the afternoon, she recalled noticing a man in a couple of different sections of the store before spotting him in the curtain section with a rope curtain tie in his hand, and again at the checkout, where he was buying the curtain ties.
Lauren noticed he was constantly staring at her and following her every move, which reminded her of something her dad taught her...
"When I was growing up, my dad was always drilling it into my head to know where you are at all times and if you're bumping into someone a lot in public, it's most likely not a coincidence," she explained, "Question everything and everybody!"
The TikToker described feeling a "presence" upon her after a while, so she turned to stare at the man and recalled her dad's advice, which was:
"Clothes can be removed, hair can be changed but birthmarks and tattoos are always permanent."
Lauren noticed an eagle tattoo on the man's calf and upon doing this, she attempted to delay leaving the store by opening a store card with the checkout assistant... but it was to little avail.
As she went to leave the store, she realized he had been lurking outside and that he began to follow her to her car.
The man attempted to get Lauren's attention by claiming that he had a money-making opportunity for her and that she should go to his car to check it out.
Wary that he might be able to find out her address if he saw her license plate, Lauren was torn between going to her car and locking the door, and avoiding her car altogether.
But upon spotting another car in the car park, Lauren ran towards the driver, prompting the man to run away as fast as he could.
Highlighting how her dad's advice helped her, Lauren said, "Thank God that I was aware of what was going on in the store when he was following me and then [I made] better decisions to not go with him."
Lauren described the man as a "psycho-maniac" who "knew what was going on."
"It just goes to show that this kind of stuff can happen at any time, any place... this again was a Sunday, 4.45 pm, it was super close to home," she said.
Lauren then posted a follow-up video in which she explained what her dad said to her when she called him to tell him what happened.
She didn't go back to her car for a few hours due to the fact she was scared the man was still somewhere in the parking lot and he'd be able to get her details, but she recalled what her father told her to do.
"He told me to call the police and report it - just because a crime didn't happen, you need to describe this man to them so crimes don't happen in the future and they can go through those records and find him if this is something that happens to someone else."
Other videos posted on Lauren's TikTok see her sharing "inspirational quotes" from her dad...
Which include "Never turn your back towards the door," "Nothing good comes after 11 pm," and "Never take a jog before 8 am."
Among his advice is also "Order drinks that come in bottles, they are harder to drug", "men don't ask for help", and "if you think you are being followed, make 4 right turns."
This is the kind of advice that all women should be hearing.
