A TikTok user has blasted Walmart for only putting security tags on makeup for dark skin tones and the backlash is well and truly deserved...
Now, there's absolutely no denying that people with darker skin tones struggle to find certain products that match properly...
Especially in the world of health and beauty.
Over the last few years, the beauty industry has been slammed for failing people of color...
But change is slowly happening.
Thanks to the incredibly successful product launch of Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, which addressed the whitewashing of the beauty industry, any brands now launching with fewer than forty shades of foundation are seen to be slacking, and rightly so.
A lot of brands are finally getting their act together...
Though there is still a problem with drugstore brands trailing behind with a smaller selection of skin tones that they cater for.
But this goes beyond just the availability of darker skin tone shades in makeup...
The beauty industry has been known for its lack of diversity for years. Not only did we fail to see models of color and Black models on the runway, but we also did not see them promoting products which led to the alienation of several minority groups.
And those that were lucky enough to be the one POC model were subjected to traumatizing rituals throughout their careers.
From bleaching their skin to being forced to use lighter shades unfit for purpose, these women were not considered the "default" like white models were so the industry did not care about promoting them.
Why did it take so long for such a necessary change to occur?
The past decade has been focussed on repairing a broken industry, with glimmers of hope finally starting to show. A lot of the newer shades that weren't available before have now been marketed towards medium to dark skin tones.
And even though we now have a range of different models at the forefront of a lot of popular brands...
Some companies still manage to perpetuate their stereotypes in other more subtle ways behind the scenes.
And a Tik Tok user recently showed us a disturbing revelation which is the perfect example of that.
While shopping in Walmart, Aly, a woman from Kentucky, showed how the store only security tagged darker skin-toned concealers while all the lighter shades were left without them.
Of course, this outraged customers as many jumped to share their thoughts...
Kentucky has to be one of the most blatantly racist states in the union, they don't even bother to hide it -- KY, MO, TN, AL, TX, FL... just awful. Not that it isn't a malignant cancer metasticizing chaotically throughout the nation since before it's inception.

I work in a store in a prominently black community ❤. More is stolen in the yt section! I RARELY see things stolen from the ethnic products!! 1 of my depts is hair/skin care. Been workin for the public for 30 yrs. Never had a prob w/poc. Always white people. Do better!
That looks like outright racism to me. Why not attach security tags to all makeup? Seems they only targeted dark skinned customers. Are these folks stupid or just that racists?

That's what I'm saying! 🤣🤣🤣

What would the South be without it's beloved racism? It's basically their entire identy and has been for close to 300 years. To the people who live there that don't identify, get out as soon as you can. Nothing flourishes there.

This is exhausting

Disgusting. They do that for certain hair products too

When just a small picture shines a very bright light on the bigger picture. It’s so incredibly disturbing

In the video, Aly heads towards the Maybelline Fit Me concealers and notices that the only ones tagged are the dark shades.
She then pans to the products in front of her...
And of course, here are the products aimed at fairer skin tones... ie. white people.
Am I surprised? Not really.
I'm not surprised with comments like this one either:
Does that make it racist or did they just identify the product that is ACTUALLY most frequently stolen and tag it?

But let me tell you why that is unlikely and borderlining frustrating to see.
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the most stolen items in stores generally are meat, razors, and baby formula but those aren't locked up.
And not only that, makeup items aren't the only things that Walmart seems to lock up.
Here are the products for Black haircare vs the standard stuff:

Are you seeing the pattern here?
So don't tell me that this is simply "expensive/most stolen products" being locked away.
If that's how narrow-minded we're going to stay as a society, we're never going to be able to solve these problems that plague us. Walmart really needs to fix up.
Here's the video so you can see it for yourselves:
