Last Thursday, a killer whale was found stranded off the coast of Alaska. Amazingly, it was still alive - and this prompted locals to launch an incredible rescue mission.
The U.S coast guard was alerted that a twenty-foot orca had been discovered on the rocks by the side of the sea on Prince of Wales Island, near the coast of British Columbia. The whale was around 4 feet above sea level, meaning the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had to step in. They encouraged members of the public to keep the orca wet using seawater, plus ensure any birds or other potential threats were kept away.
Many members of the public heard the call and decided to take up the mission. Many congregated around the stranded whale, splashing it with seawater until the true rescue mission could begin.

The whale was reportedly vocalizing during the episode and amazingly so, other orcas gathered in the water to offer support. The whale reportedly became more lively as it was splashed with water, proving the method was working which not only helped keep the whale comfortable and safe but also prevented other animals like birds from being able to injure the creature.
Chance Strickland, the captain of the private yacht that discovered the whale, told The New York Times: "I don't speak a lot of whales, but it didn't seem real stoked. There were tears coming out of its eyes."
After the public's rescue mission, officials from the NOAA came in to take over. They decided the best plan of action was to wait until the tide came in, in the hopes of refloating the whale and avoiding having to move it along the rocky shore. Luckily, 6 hours after the whale was initially spotted, the tide rose high enough for the whale to be able to swim back out to sea.
The whale, which has since been identified as T146D, was a thirteen-year-old juvenile Bigg's killer whale and there are just 400 or so of these creatures left in the wild.
