T-Pain has revealed that he fell into a 4-year depression after Usher told him he "ruined music."
In a clip from the Netflix series, This Is Pop, the rapper opened up about the root of his depression.
In the clip, T-Pain recalls Usher telling him that he "kinda f***** up music."
"Usher was my friend. I really respect Usher. And he said, 'I'm gonna tell you something, man. You kinda f***** up music.'"
Usher was referring to T-Pains continuous use of Auto-tune to change his voice in many songs like "Low" and "Blame It"...
The same songs that secured T-Pain places at the top of the Billboards charts.
At first, T-pain though his friend was joking, but he soon realised Usher was serious.
"And then he was like, 'Yeah man you really f***** up music for real singers,'" he recalled.
"I was like, 'What did I do? I came out and I used Auto-Tune.' He was like, 'Yeah, you f***** it up.' I'm like, 'But I used it, I didn't tell everybody else to start using it.'"
Usher's comment made T-Pain question the impact he was making on the music industry.
And although T-Pain did not realize it at the time, that is the moment that "started a 4-year depression."
"That is the very moment, and I don't even think I realized this for a long time, but that's the very moment that started a four-year depression for me," he said.
The series launches on Netflix today.
